The United Methodist Women (UMW) is a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
Oakland UMW is an amazingly busy ministry that serves many local projects, including serving funeral dinners, writing monthly letters and providing Christmas Gifts to those who are confined to their homes, and hosting two of Oakland’s most well-attended annual events: the Fall Festival and the Mother/Daughter Banquet. Additional projects include making hats for premature babies, making quilts for babies, participating in “Presents for Patients” by donating presents to local nursing homes, crocheting sleeping mats for the homeless, and creating Sunshine Baskets and Prayer Bears.
Needless to this, these women are always busy, and are greatly appreciated by the Oakland family and surrounding community. Regular monthly meetings occur from the months of September to May, with a break for summer.
